Minority Walks Out of Parliament’s Approval of Martin Adjei Korsah and Three Others

The Minority Group in Ghana’s Parliament has boycotted the approval of the last batch of the President’s nomination for Deputy Ministerial appointments.

The last four are Ms. Diana Asonaba Dappah, Deputy Minister Designate for Office of the Attorney-General and Justice; Hon. Lariba Zuweira Abdul, Deputy Minister Designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection; Hon. Martin Adjei Mensah-Korsah, Deputy Minister Designate for Local Government and Rural Development; Hon. Amidu Ossahaku Chinnia, Deputy Minister Designate for Sanitation and Water Resources.

According to the group, they could not be part of the approval of the last four nominees since they did not take part in the vetting of the nominees. The Minority were away on a National tree planting exercise dubbed “the Greening Ghana Project” with the consent of the Speaker.

Moments before the House would adopt the report of the appointment committee of Parliament on Wednesday, June 23, 2021, the Deputy Minority Leader, James Klutse Avedzi rose to his feet to inform the House that his side would not participate in the decision making because their side have been treated fairly by the Chairman of the Committee.

He referred to a paragraph in the report to back their decision which indicated that, “The Members of the Minority side on the Committee did not take part in the proceedings as they were away for the Tree Planting exercise in their various Constituencies as directed by the Rt. Hon Speaker.”

Later in a press conference addressed by the Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini on behalf of the Minority Group after adjournment, to justify the Minority boycott.

According to him, the Minority feels disrespected by the decision of the Chairman of the Committee, Joseph Osei-Owusu to continue with the vetting in the absence of the Minority when they were on an official duty sanctioned by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin.

He said, “Our decision is borne out of what we consider insincerity and disrespect on the part of the Majority. Not just to us as Members of the Minority, but also even to the Speaker of Parliament.” Watch video here(https://fb.watch/6lMQuL4AF3/)

However, a counter press conference by the Majority in response to the Minority addressed by the MP for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea indicated that the Minority elected to participate in the Tree Planting Exercise at the expense of the vetting. And therefore, the Minority can not take the whole nation for ransom for what they choose. Watch video here (https://fb.watch/6lP1fqmulU/)
