Our Military Men Acted Unprofessionally; they Will be Punished – Defence Minister

Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Dominic Nitihul, has admitted that the military personnel who invaded and terrorized the people in Wa in the Upper West region, acted unprofessionally.

The Minister said, it was uncharacteristic for members of the Ghana Armed Forces to put up such a behavior against the very people they are supposed to protect. He assured that the Ghana Armed Forces is set to activate a set of disciplinary measures against those involved as soon as an internal investigation is completed.

“The Ministry has already set up a small committee from the National Security, from the Defence Intelligence and another person to go there and find out exactly whether there are other remote causes. Because, it is simply not a military culture to just move into a town to molest people. It is not something I have heard before,” he said.

The Minister made the comment on the Floor of Parliament on Friday, July 2, 2021 in a reaction to demands by the Minority for a Parliamentary inquiry into reports of a military brutality in Wa over a stollen phone belonging to a military officer.

He narrated that according to briefings he received, the soldier’s invasion on the Wa township was triggered by a report by one of their colleagues that he had been robbed of his phone and money at knife point in the town. In solidarity, they marched up to the town heavily and took it hostage it. They descended heavy beatings on anyone they set their eyes on in the town, injuring many of them.

Following agitations by the Minority side who wore red arm bands on the Floor of the House in protest, the Defence Minister reported to Parliament that the “Military immediately issued a statement this morning condemning what has happened and promising to discipline the officers who did that. They have also sent the Chief of Army Staff because of the seriousness with which we view this matter.”

According to him, this incident was really unfortunate because it was not sanctioned by the Regional Minister or the commanding Officers; neither was it sanctioned by anybody in Accra.

“It was a spontaneous reaction of some young men and women of the Armed Forces who moved to town to do that with some trigger they felt was the issue,” he explained.

The Speaker has therefore tasked the Committee on Defence and Interior to “collect and collate the facts and report to the House within four weeks.”
