Speaker Bagbin Vows to Ensure Swift Passage of Private Members Bill against LGBTQI

The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin, has assured that Parliament will swiftly pass the private Members Bill seeking to criminalize the activities of homosexuals in the country as soon as it is presented to the House.

The Speaker gave the assurance when the Coalition of MPs against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex Plus (LGBTQI+) in Ghana’s Parliament presented the draft Bill to him on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at the Speaker’s Prayer Breakfast Meeting, held at the Speaker’s Lounge in the Job 600 building in Parliament.

The Bill which is yet to be formerly presented to Parliament, is a Private Members Bill being promoted by the members of the coalition to criminalize all activities in relation to all forms of homosexuality in the country.

The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, who made the presentation on behalf of the group said, because of the support the group received from faith based institutions and several opinion leaders including the Speaker’s Office ”I can assure you that this Bill will be a reference for countries and Parliaments across the world. That is the work we have done.”

He affirmed that, “this Bill seeks to criminalize not just the activity but the promotion, advocacy, funding of homosexuality in all of its forms. And so, it will become criminal upon the successful passage of this Bill into law. For anybody to produce any promotional material; any TV station to show any content that supports it; anybody who wants to provide funding for LGBTQI activities and those engaged in their activities.”

The Rt. Hon. Speaker, Alban Sumana Bagbin, in congratulating the group for doing such a great job within a very short period, promised to ensure that the Bill is presented to the House within a short period and passed into law swiftly.

“I am very clear in my mind that this House, the Parliament of Ghana will pass this Bill as soon as possible… I want to assure all of you that, we will create room this week for the Bill to be presented to Parliament officially.

“We will refer it to the appropriate committee and it will go through the process and invite anybody who has anything to add or take away, to appear before the committee. The Committee will present a report, will take it through all the stages of processing a Bill, and Insha Allah, it will be passed this year,” he said.
