The Clerk to Ghana\u2019s Parliament, Cyril Kwabena Nsiah, has admonished the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) to be circumspect wit their reportage on the activities of the current 8th Parliament in order not to derail the country\u2019s enviable Parliamentary democracy which is going through its toughest test yet.<\/strong>
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, the role of the media and for that matter the Parliamentary Press Corps is very crucial to the success of the country\u2019s democratic advancement especially in the life of this unique Parliament where the stakes are high because of the equal numbers of the two major political parties with representation in the Legislative House.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged the members of the Press Corps to be mindful of the fact that though the freedom of the press is guaranteed in a democracy, it is not absolute because it comes with responsibilities and care must be taken not to trample on the rights of other Citizens or to jeopardize the public interest.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe role of the Press Corps is crucial to the sustainability and growth of parliamentary democracy, particularly in our current dispensation where we have a Parliament with a rather unique composition. Now more than ever, the tenets of our democratic credentials are being tested, and how we navigate this period and its associated complexities will determine how far we travel on the path of democracy and development, as a nation,\u201d he said.

Mr. Nsiah made the call when he addressed the opening session of a two-day media capacity enhancement workshop for the members of the Parliamentary Press Corps held at the City Escape hotel in Prampram from May 13 to 15, 2022.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop which was designed to upgrade the capacity of the Corps to further help them with the requisite knowledge and skills for the effective and efficient discharge of their duties, was under the theme: “A Knowledgeable Reporter as a Promoter of Multi-Party Parliamentary Democracy”.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Director of Public Affairs in Ghana\u2019s Parliament, Madam Kate Addo, on her part, commended the Press Corps for being professional in the discharge of their duties in the House and for exhibiting an apolitical posture in their conduct so far.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She however urged the professional journalists including those reporting from the Parliament to specialize in particular areas of strength and interest in order to stem the tide of citizen journalists who are gradually encroaching on the field of journalism and diluting the impact professional journalism.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps, Simon Agianab, appealed to his colleagues to use their platforms to shape the people\u2019s perspective about Parliament but should steer away from becoming the mouthpiece of the institution. He further urged his colleagues to continue to keep their relationship with the Members of Parliament, nothing but professional.

The Dean also used the opportunity to appeal to the Clerk and the Leadership of Parliament to ensure that, members of the Parliamentary Press Corps are included in the trips by the various committees as part of the capacity building of members to better appreciate the background information of the issues before they are presented on the Floor of Parliament.
