The Member of Parliament for Bimbila and former Minister for Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, has publicly declared his support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race, stressing that his decision is driven by strategy and conviction rather than regional ties.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Nitiwul dismissed suggestions that his support was based on shared regional background, insisting that Dr. Bawumia represents the party\u2019s best chance of reclaiming power in the 2028 general elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am not supporting Bawumia because he is my brother or we come from the same area. We want to win the 2028 elections and Bawumia, for me, is the most marketed candidate among the five. Ghanaians have already assessed him,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the former Defence Minister, historical voting patterns in Ghana show that the electorate hardly votes for a candidate at their first attempt, noting that figures like former Presidents Kufuor, Atta Mills, Mahama, and Akufo-Addo all had to be tried and tested before being accepted by the Ghanaian public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf we want to win the next elections, we need to bring somebody that Ghanaians have assessed,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Nitiwul, who served alongside Dr. Bawumia in the Akufo-Addo administration, said his endorsement was also based on the Vice President\u2019s proven policy ideas and integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBawumia is the only person who has been able to convince me that he has policies that can help Ghana. Even as Vice President, I sat with him in cabinet for eight years, and he convinced me that he has what it takes to help the people of Ghana,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citing his past political choices, Mr. Nitiwul recalled supporting Nana Akufo-Addo against the late Aliu Mahama\u2014also a northerner\u2014during the NPP\u2019s internal contest, reinforcing that his decisions have always been grounded in principle rather than geography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that Ghanaians are currently assessing the performance of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and will be looking for a credible, non-corrupt, and competent alternative in the next general election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen it comes to Bawumia as an individual, there are three characteristics that Ghanaians are looking for. One, somebody who is not corrupt\u2014Bawumia has proven that in all his public life. Two, somebody they can assess, and he has passed that test. And lastly, somebody they already know and can trust to hand over the nation to, and Bawumia has been able to pass that test as well,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, in a related development, some Members of the Minority Caucus in Parliament have also declared their support for Dr. Bawumia ahead of the party\u2019s flagbearer elections, expected to be held in early 2026. The group announced their position at a press conference on Thursday, October 23, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
