The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Agyei, has assured Parliament that government is taking steps to address Ghana\u2019s perennial flooding challenges ahead of the upcoming rainy season.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Appearing before the Government Assurances Committee chaired by Dominic Nitihul, the Minister indicated that his Ministry is collaborating with relevant agencies to develop a comprehensive flood mitigation plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that a detailed update on preparedness efforts would be presented to the Committee before the onset of the rains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the long-standing water challenges in Tamale, the Minister revealed that feasibility studies for the Tamale Water Project are currently being undertaken by the World Bank. He explained that upon completion of the studies, contractual processes will commence to address the acute water shortages in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Touching on flooding concerns in the Kwasi Mintim area, the Ministry said plans are underway to undertake dredging works in collaboration with the Hydrological Services Department, pending the release of funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the Committee expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Ministry\u2019s handling of a separate assurance relating to the relocation and construction of a road project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members described the Ministry\u2019s response as inadequate, revealing that eight months after the assurance was made, there has been no formal engagement with the relevant institutions responsible for implementing the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials of the Ministry admitted that their engagements so far have been informal, relying on WhatsApp messages and phone calls rather than structured, official communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee emphasized that such an approach falls short of the standards expected in executing government assurances and demanded more decisive and formal action going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
