ACCRA, Ghana<\/strong> \u2013 The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku<\/strong>, has assured Ghanaians that the government is implementing strategic measures to significantly increase tomato production nationwide, with the aim of ending the country’s dependence on imports from neighboring countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Appearing before Government Assurances Committee, Mr. Opoku said the government remains committed to transforming Ghana’s tomato sector through targeted interventions designed to boost local production and guarantee a stable supply of the commodity throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He disclosed that within the next three to four months, Ghanaians should begin to witness a significant increase in tomato production, resulting in improved availability of the crop on local markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Minister, the anticipated increase in output will not only meet domestic demand but also generate sufficient surplus to enable Ghana to export tomatoes to neighboring countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Opoku explained that the Ministry is collaborating closely with farmers and other stakeholders across the agricultural value chain to improve access to high-quality seeds, expand irrigation infrastructure, strengthen agricultural extension services, and promote the adoption of modern farming technologies and best practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that these interventions form part of the government’s broader agenda to enhance food production, reduce the country’s dependence on imported agricultural commodities, and improve the livelihoods of local farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minister further stated that achieving self-sufficiency in tomato production would help stabilize market prices, increase farmers’ incomes, strengthen national food security, and eliminate the risks and financial burden faced by Ghanaian traders who often travel to neighboring countries in search of tomatoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Opoku’s assurance came in response to concerns over the country’s recurring tomato shortages and the heavy reliance on imports, particularly during the lean production season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
