The Chief Information Officer of the Information Management Services Division of Parliament, Dr. Kate Addo, has appealed to the leadership of Parliament to address persistent challenges facing the Parliamentary Press Corps, including inadequate reporting equipment, limited workspace and the exclusion of journalists from international parliamentary trips.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said addressing these challenges was essential to enabling parliamentary journalists to perform their duties effectively and provide the public with accurate and timely information on the work of the legislature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Addo made the appeal while addressing members of the Parliamentary Press Corps at a workshop organised by Parliament\u2019s Media Relations Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the concerns, she urged journalists to uphold the core principles of professional reporting, particularly accuracy, fairness, context and respect for the dignity of Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI urge you to hold firmly to the values that define good reporting. These are accuracy, fairness, context and respect for the dignity of the House. When in doubt, verify. And let the Parliamentary Service be your point of confirmation,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inadequate Equipment, Limited Workspace<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Addo commended the Media Relations Department for organising the workshop and expressed appreciation to the Clerk to Parliament for his continued support for the division and the media in Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, she highlighted the difficulties confronting members of the Press Corps, particularly the lack of adequate working tools for live reporting and monitoring parliamentary activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also cited the limited workspace available to journalists, which she said could not accommodate all members of the Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe challenges exist and these are in the forms of the lack of adequate working tools for live reporting and general monitoring, coupled with a small working space that does not contain all the Corps members,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Addo further expressed concern about the continued exclusion of parliamentary journalists from international trips, as well as the lack of food for members of the Corps when parliamentary sittings extend late into the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She described these issues as persistent problems affecting the working conditions and activities of parliamentary correspondents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clerk Promises to Address Concerns<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chief Information Officer disclosed that, as head of the division and a Member of Parliament\u2019s management board, she had consistently raised the concerns with the Clerk and other relevant officials in the hope of securing lasting solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said the Clerk had indicated his commitment to resolving the challenges as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs head of the division and member of the management board, I continue to bring these issues to the attention of the Clerk and my colleagues with the hope of quick resolution. The Clerk has indicated to me that he will see to solving these challenges as soon as possible,\u201d she disclosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She expressed optimism that the assurances would translate into concrete improvements in the working conditions of parliamentary journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Appeals to New Majority Leader<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Addo also welcomed the new Majority Leader, who was present at the workshop, and appealed to him to use his influence to support efforts to secure the necessary resources for parliamentary journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She urged him to work through the Media Relations Division and the department to engage the Clerk and other appropriate authorities on the concerns raised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe hope that working through the division and the department he will use his muscle to get the Clerk and the appropriate authorities to see to provide all the necessary equipment for my people to do a good job,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her appeal highlighted the need for stronger institutional support for the Parliamentary Press Corps, who\u2019s reporting helps citizens understand parliamentary debates, legislative decisions and the activities of their elected representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strong Media, Stronger Democracy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concluding her remarks, Dr. Addo underscored the importance of an informed media in strengthening democratic governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She urged participants to make the most of the workshop while reaffirming the connection between professional journalism, public awareness and democratic accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA well-informed press makes for a well-informed public and a well-informed public makes for a stronger democracy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop was organised to strengthen the capacity of parliamentary journalists and enhance their understanding of Parliament\u2019s work and the expectations of the Majority and Minority leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Addo\u2019s remarks brought renewed attention to the need to balance expectations of accurate, responsible reporting with improved working conditions and adequate institutional support for journalists covering Ghana\u2019s Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
