The Majority Leader, Hon. James Agalga, has cautioned members of the Parliamentary Press Corps against prejudicial reporting on matters before the courts and the unauthorised publication of confidential parliamentary proceedings, warning that such breaches could attract contempt proceedings.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing a professional development workshop for the Press Corps organised by the Media Relations Department of Parliament, he urged journalists to respect the rules governing in-camera committee hearings, embargoed documents and matters pending before the courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRespect the rules on reporting in-camera sessions and embargoed documents. Respecting these rules protects Parliament\u2019s integrity and protects you from legal exposure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explaining the principle of sub judice<\/em>, which concerns matters pending before a court, Mr Agalga said journalists must exercise caution when reporting on ongoing cases to avoid publications that could prejudice judicial proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf a matter is under a judge and you report on the matter in a manner that is prejudicial, you know the consequences can be grave in character. You can be cited and dealt with for contempt,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that Parliament also exercises powers to cite individuals for contempt, particularly where its proceedings and established rules are undermined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Agalga further cautioned journalists against publishing information obtained from closed-door committee hearings or documents placed under embargo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said unauthorised disclosure of information from in-camera proceedings could expose journalists to contempt proceedings by Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Majority Leader urged members of the Press Corps to balance their responsibility to inform the public with respect for parliamentary procedures, judicial processes and confidentiality requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His remarks formed part of efforts to strengthen professional standards and promote responsible parliamentary reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
