Ghana’s Admission to Security Council Should Influence Peace and Security in West Africa – Dr. Kingsley Nyarko

The Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Dr. Kingsley Nyarko has observed that Ghana’s presence on the United Nations Security Council should translate into deepening its peacekeeping efforts for international peace and security, particularly in the West African sub-region.

According to him, since Ghana has been in the process of cultivating the culture of internal peace and promoting the practice of peace with the rest of Africa and the world since colonial rule, it would be necessary for the country to put this enviable relevance and superiority of influence into action by promoting constructive dialogue in West Africa, Africa and the world.

“Indeed, Ghana has been involved in developing and supporting early warning systems to support peace and security protocols at the regional and continental levels. Today, Ghana ranks among the top ten contributors to UN peacekeeping, with nearly 3,000 personnel serving on eight different missions across the world,” he said.

Dr. Kingsley Nyarko made the observation on the Floor of Parliament on Thursday, February 10, 2022 when he made a statement on Ghana’s presence on the United Nation’s Security Council for the fourth time.

Having served on the Council for the terms 1962-1963, 1986-1987, and 2006-2007, Ghana will serve a two-year term on the UN Security Council from January 2022 to December 2023 as she makes a return after 15 years.

Her fourth time admission to the Council on January 4, 2022 was heralded with a flag installation ceremony as the West African country secured 185 votes out of the 190 votes cast; the highest number of votes garnered compared to the other four new Member States Elected to hold a non-permanent seat on the Council, including Albanian, Brazil, Gabon, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
