MPs of the Majority and the Minority side of Ghana’s Parliament have traded blows on the Floor of Parliament over their disagreements on the Electronic Transactions Levy being introduced by the Government.
The disagreement came about when the presiding First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu, decided to take part in the voting process which was to determine whether it not the Electronic Transactions Bill should be taken under a certificate of urgency.
It would be recalled that the Minority had indicated their clear opposition to the introduction of the E-levy which is to impose a levy of 1.75% on Mobile Money transactions and Bank transfers to finance the 2022 budget.
Just when the First Deputy speaker was about to get up for the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah to take the chair, the Minority MPs moved in to stop the change over process while the Majority MPs also moved in to prevent them. This degenerated into into real fisticuffs in the House.
In the circumstances, the House had to adjourn for calmness to prevail before the process is kick started again on Tuesday, December 21, 2021. The House adjourned at exactly a minute past midnight.
