Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has nominated the First Deputy Speaker, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, to serve on the Resolution Drafting Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The nomination, made during the 152nd Assembly of the IPU in Istanbul, Türkiye, received unanimous endorsement from members of the African Geopolitical Group. Speaker Bagbin, who currently serves as President of the African Geopolitical Group of the IPU, also nominated the Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa to the committee.
The endorsement of both nominees reflected the confidence reposed in their leadership and contributions to parliamentary diplomacy within the African bloc.
On the sidelines of the Assembly, Speaker Bagbin held a series of bilateral meetings with delegations from Australia, Algeria, Belgium, Canada, Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco, Qatar, Türkiye and Ukraine.

The discussions focused on strengthening economic cooperation, enhancing parliamentary diplomacy, and expanding collaboration in areas such as trade, investment and regional development.

The meetings also highlighted the need for African solidarity in addressing common challenges including security concerns, economic resilience and sustainable development.
The engagements are seen as reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to building strong international partnerships and promoting peace, stability and shared prosperity across Africa and beyond.
