The Minority Group in Ghana’s Parliament have sent an SOS message to Ghanaians to call on their Members of Parliament on the Majority aside of the House to show up on the Floor for the conclusion of the debate for the approval of the 2022 Budget.
The debate on the Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the Government for the year ending 31st December, 2022 is expected to be concluded today. However, as at midday, the Majority side of the House has been totally empty. Not a single member of the Majority Members of Parliament from the Governing party had not shown up.
The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, gave a hint to the House on Thursday evening that he would invoke the powers of the house for a head count for the approval of the Budget Statement.
The Minority has also served notice to reject the 2022 Budget if the Electronic Levy proposed by the Government is not withdrawn.
It is therefore suspected that the Majority side is trying to Marshall its forces to put its best foot forward in the battle ahead.
Addressing the press ahead of the day’s sitting, the MP for Ningo Prampram, Sam George, called on the people of Ghana to call their MPs to show up in the House for the debate since their side is ready.
According to him, the Speaker has also been ready since 10AM awaiting the presence of the Majority side of the House to come in for the work of Parliament to start. Parliamentary sittings was officially expected to have begun at 10 AM.
When asked why the Minority side would not go ahead with the sitting with the Speaker because they have the required quorum of one third of all Members of Parliament to do business, Mr. Sam George said, the Speaker would not do that because he would be accused by some section of the media of being bias.
