The Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwadaso in the Ashanti Region, Professor Kingsley Nyarko, has welcomed the progress made by the police in investigating the murder of Gideon Owusu Sarpong, a mobile money vendor who was killed during a robbery at the former onion market in Kwadaso on March 20, 2025.
In a response to a Parliamentary question posed by the MP, the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, provided an update on the case, including arrests made and court proceedings underway. Professor Nyarko, in an interview with ParliamentNews360.com, expressed satisfaction with the thoroughness of the police investigation so far, describing it as “refreshing” and “encouraging.”
“Some suspects have already been apprehended and are in police custody. They have appeared in court and are expected to reappear on the 16th of this month,” he disclosed.
However, the MP emphasized that true closure would come only when justice is served. “You cannot commit such a heinous crime and go scot-free. The law must deal with you. It must serve as a deterrent to others,” he insisted.
Beyond justice, Professor Nyarko called on the Ministry of the Interior and the government to implement long-term security interventions to protect mobile money vendors and their customers, not only in Kwadaso but across the Ashanti Region.
“We want an environment devoid of fear — where vendors and customers can go about their business in peace,” he said. He also stressed the need for improved security to prevent similar crimes in areas like Kofrom and other parts of the region where similar incidents have occurred.
Describing the Ashanti Region as the “breadbasket” of the nation and a hub of vibrant trading activity, the MP urged the new Interior Minister to work with security agencies to restore calm and ensure the safety of traders and residents.
