The Majority Chief Whip in the Parliament of Ghana, Frank Annor Dompreh, is appealing to the NDC Minority Caucus to rescind its decision not to approve the nominations of the President for Ministerial appointments.
According to him, it is unfair for the Minority to participate in the vetting of the President’s nominees with a predetermined agenda not to approve of them regardless of how they perform before the Committee.
The Minority Group led by its new leader, Dr. Cassiel Ata Bash Forsen, served notice at a press conference on Monday that, their side will not approve any of the President’s additional nominees, in solidarity with the people who are demanding for a downsize in the government of President Nana Akufo Addo to reflect the austere economic measures being undertaken by the government.
Addressing a press conference in Parliament on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, the Majority Chief Whip urged them to consider the fact that almost all the nominees are their colleague members of Parliament who have gotten the rare chance to become Ministers to contribute their quota to the development of the country. And also Called on them to stick to the convention and not to scuttle the opportunity for their colleagues.
“In this House, there is this convention that any time that any of our colleagues is privileged to be nominated, we rally around one another to get them endorsed,” he said.
According to the Majority Chief Whip, the Minority would be doing the country a great disservice if they fail to approve these brilliant nominees such as Hon. KT. Hammond penned for the Ministry of Trade and Industry; Hon. Brian Acheampong, for the Ministry of Food and Agriculture; and Hon. O.B. Amoah as the Minister of State at the Local Government Ministry among others.
The rest of the nominees include: Mohammed Amin Adam, Deputy Minister Designate for Finance; Dr. Stephen Amoah, Deputy Minister Designate for Trade and Industry; and Stephen Asamoa Boateng, Minister Designate for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
His appeal went to both the General Secretary and the leadership of the NDC party because the party issued a directive to the Minority Caucus not to approve of the President’s nominees.
